The Simplicity of a Curvy Checkmark

Yesterday's WSJ reported on Nike's refocused energies of simplifying its merchandise. The article, "Nike Gets Back to Basics, Reinventing the T-Shirt," said Nike is adopting one design for mainstays in the athletic clothing industry, such as t-shirts, shorts, and hoodies. This new focus will increase the energy spent on core sports, while backing off others. For details of the campaign, read the article. Even if you are nothing like my friend who has the fiercest brand loyalty to Nike (he went to a Hummer dealership to discuss purchasing the soon-to-be released H3 because it was rumored to have Nike tires), you will find the article intriguing.

One of the more interesting points of the article was that Nike Golf and the Jordan brand will not be affected by the simplification because they are separated divisions. As the journalist Stephanie Kang discusses, it does not seem possible that an entire division could operate around one person. Maybe not, but Michael Jordan seems to still be in an entirely separate class by himself. The division centered around his legend generated $750 million in sales last year alone. I wonder what his royalties are like...

Great memory. Great to have a shout out. I have switched my loyalties to Adidas. Not really. Never.
