Major Overhaul of the Internet
Apparently a small group of innovators are rallying to completely rethink the internet and recreate it. Advocates argue that the current uses of the internet were not what the creators had in mind. The internet was developed with two main assumptions: (1) computers would be in fixed locations, not having wireless capabilities, and (2) security was not as important because the users trusted one another. These advocates propose a redesign of the internet to make it more compatible with its current functions.
"'Almost every assumption going into the current design of the Internet is open to reconsideration and challenge,' said Parulkar, the NSF official heading to Stanford. 'Researchers may come up with wild ideas and very innovative ideas that may not have a lot to
do with the current Internet.'"

It seems like there are significant barriers to changing the current system, but these barriers do not seem so large when compared to creating fire or walking on the moon.
Go here for the rest of the article. I was pleased to see that Al Gore was not quoted or referenced in any way, after all, he is the "father of the internet."
